At least 64 people are dead. Another 65 are missing. And more than 100,000 homes across five Mexican states have been swallowed by floodwaters.
This isn’t a distant disaster. It’s a humanitarian crisis unfolding just south of the U.S. border, and it’s being drowned out by silence.
What Happened
Over the weekend, the remnants of Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Storm Raymond collided over central and Gulf Coast Mexico, unleashing torrential rains that overwhelmed rivers, collapsed hillsides, and erased entire roads.
The worst-hit states include Veracruz (29 dead, 18 missing), Hidalgo (21 dead, 43 missing), Puebla (13 dead, 4 missing), and Querétaro (1 dead). In Poza Rica, students from Universidad Veracruzana say nearly 200 classmates are still unaccounted for, demanding expanded search efforts in low-lying neighborhoods.
President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the government underestimated the storm’s impact. “There were no meteorological signs that could have indicated to us the magnitude,” she said Monday. But for families who lost everything, that’s not enough.
On the Ground
10,000+ troops deployed for rescue and aid
Helicopters ferrying food and water to 200+ cut-off communities
Power outages affected over 320,000 people
Stagnant water now threatens dengue fever outbreaks
In towns like Álamo, Tuxpan, and Huehuetla, homes near rivers have “practically disappeared.” Streets are rivers. Walls are streaked with oil and sewage. And the cleanup hasn’t even begun.
🧠 Vibin Perspective
This isn’t just a weather story. It’s a visibility story. When disaster hits the margins - rural towns, poor communities, Indigenous land - it rarely makes the front page. But the grief is just as real. The loss, just as deep.
And while the headlines move on, the people left behind are still wading through the wreckage.
